I tried to remove polish from a gel manicure with an acetone soak and received 2nd degree burns, why?

My acetone was really old (back of shelf, didn't want to run to Walmart), I'm wondering if it was the age of the acetone or because of the chemical reaction between the two things: Acetone and the gel product that I received second degree chemical burns? Please be careful, everyone! I'm in pain, 10 fingers wrapped with Neosporin, on antibiotics, pain pills, received a tetanus shot, have an emergency hospital bill, need Dr. follow up, and I'm wearing plastic gloves over bandages to function daily. What a mess.
