How can i change the neckline of my t shirt?

i have a t shirt and it's really awkwardly shaped at the top, it's like a choking scoop neck. i'd like to change it into a v neck with a little more shoulder showing. i know that sounds stupid and half of you are going to be like "JUST CUT IT" but i'm afraid it'll start to fray and look awkward and weird (:
